Special Veteran Plates or Placards

Application for Veterans displaying special license plates or Bronze Star placards

Overview

A legal resident of the State of Missouri and Veteran of Service in the Armed Forces of the United States who has been awarded any of the following:

  • The Congressional Medal of Honor
  • The Purple Heart
  • The Silver Star or is a former Prisoner of War

May apply for special vehicle license plates through the Missouri Department of Revenue.

Recipients of the Bronze Star may apply for a removable windshield placard.

Veterans correctly displaying one of these special vehicle license plates or placards may park free of charge at regular metered parking spots throughout the City of St. Louis, as determined by Section 304.725 of the Revised Statutes of the State of Missouri.

This privilege shall not exempt a vehicle displaying one of these special plates or placards from all other State of Missouri or City of St. Louis parking regulations including, but not limited to, maximum time period allowances, no parking dates, handicapped only parking, street cleaning, snow emergencies and any restrictions posted on meters or street signage.

NOTE:

At this time, Specialty license plates must be renewed by mail or at a Missouri license office.

You must renew your personalized military license plate within 60 days of expiration to ensure the military personalized plates are held in your name.

Preparation

To obtain a set of personalized or specialty license plates for your vehicle, you must submit a completed Application for Missouri Personalized and Special License Plates and application fee to the Missouri Department of Revenue.

You will need to submit proof of your honorable discharge (or active duty status if applicable) and that you have received the necessary military award or decoration that makes you eligible for the particular military plate.

Required forms of Proof are listed in the application instructions.

This application process is separate from any regular fees or documents that may be required when you register your vehicle.

Instructions

By Mail

  1. Complete Application for Missouri Personalized and Special License Plates.
  2. Forms are also available at any Missouri license office, or you may request a copy to be sent by mail.
  3. Mail proof of your honorable discharge (or active duty status if applicable) and that you have received the necessary military award or decoration that makes you eligible for the particular military plate, application and fee to:

Fees

Application fee $15.00

The annual fee ($15.00) indicated on the application is in addition to the regular registration fee set by law and is payable upon renewal.

What to Expect

If your requested plate configuration is available:

  • Your plates will be ordered.
    Processing for personalized and specialty plates may take 4-6 weeks.
  • A notification letter will be mailed to you when your plates are available for pickup at your designated license office.
  • Additional fees to transfer the plate to your vehicle will be required at that time.

Additional Information

If your requested plate configuration is not available, you may submit additional configuration choices with your paid receipt or you may apply for a refund of the $15 application fee.

Check License Plate Status

If you submitted an application for a personalized or special license plate more than three weeks ago, you may use our website to check the status of your personalized or specialty plate order.

Before submitting your inquiry, please note that processing for personalized and specialty plates may take six weeks.
