Pageant and Masque

No account of activities in the western part of Forest Park would be complete without a mention of the Historical Pageant and Masque of St. Louis. This important event, which commemorated the City's sesquicentennial, was held on Art Hill from May 28 through June 1, 1914. The Pageant presented the early history of the City with a cast of 5,600 persons and was followed by the Masque which was a symbolic spectacle depicting the relationship of St. Louis to the life of the nation. Audiences of over 150,000 people watched each of these nocturnal performances from the vantage of the huge amphitheater on the hill before the Art Museum.
