Metro Area Receives Increase in HIV/AIDS Funding

 The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has increased the amount of funding the St. Louis metropolitan area will receive for HIV/AIDS medical care services. The funds will be awarded from the Ryan White program. Area funds from the program increased 8.6 percent from last year's award, going from $5.7 million to $6.2 million. The funds can be used to cover services such as medication, insurance, and support services for those individuals living with HIV/AIDS. 

Seven counties in Missouri and five counties in Illinois will directly benefit from the funds. "Our region is fortunate to have the support of Congressman William Lacy Clay, Jr. and U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill," said Pamela Walker, Health Director for the City of St. Louis. "Congressman Clay and Senator McCaskill have been strong public health allies and vocal advocates on issues related to HIV/AIDS." 

The Health Department reported that there are more than 6,500 individuals in the metro area living with HIV/AIDS. Last year more than 4,100 individuals received some type of support from the Ryan White funds the area received.
