Cranes are Coming to Art Hill
Memorial for Fallen First Responders will be on Art Hill in Forest Park on Saturday, Aug. 4

One thousand oversized origami paper cranes will be placed on Art Hill in Forest Park from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4 as a one-day memorial to St. Louis' fallen first responders. The event will honor the 140 St. Louis area police officers, firefighters, EMS personnel and FBI agents who have been killed in the line of duty since 1960.
The names of the fallen officers will be read at 10 a.m. by local area officials and there will be a performance by the Gateway Men's Chorus.
Each crane will have a wing span of 42 inches and will be 25 inches tall. They will be weighted down to keep them from blowing in the breeze.
At the end of the day, the cranes will be available for $10 each, with all proceeds going to The Backstoppers organization, which supports the families of fallen police and firefighters.
You may reserve a crane in advance. Visit www.stlcraneproject.com.
Richard Ruderer came up with the idea for this special event after watching a television program about the March 2011 tsunami that killed thousands of people in Japan. He was impressed with the way the Japanese people made paper cranes in memory of the deceased.
