Description
Update 2/3/2022 10:00am CST:
- The Winter Storm Warning for the City of St. Louis has been EXTENDED until 6 PM this evening. 2/3/22
- City Hall remains closed today. We continue to urge residents to avoid traveling Thursday if possible. If travel is necessary, always have a car emergency kit, do not crowd or pass snow plows, drive slowly and leave space between cars.
- Snow crews continue to work around the clock in 12-hour shifts. Crews treated roads during yesterday’s lull in precipitation to prevent ice from forming ahead of the anticipated drop in temperature. With the expected shift to heavy snowfall from rain and sleet, crews have been focused on plowing with emphasis on a.m. and p.m. rush hours. Clearing efforts will continue to focus on arterial roads and then shift to residential and secondary streets.
Original Announcement:
Winter storm warning in effect from 12:00am Wednesday to 12:00pm CST Thursday.
- What: Heavy mixed precipitation expected. Total snow accumulations between 6 and 10 inches, with locally-higher amounts, sleet accumulations around three quarters of an inch, and ice accumulations around two tenths of an inch. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph.
- Where: City of St. Louis, portions of south central and southwest Illinois. Portions of central and east central Missouri.
- When: from 12:00am Wednesday to 12:00pm CST Thursday.
- Impact: The strong winds and weight of snow on tree limbs may down power lines and could cause sporadic power outages. Travel could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes.
A Winter Storm Warning is issued when a significant combination of hazardous winter weather is occurring or imminent.
- A prolonged winter storm will bring significant snow, sleet and ice accumulation to the area.
- Major travel disruptions are expected across the entire region
Avoid travel during this storm if possible.
Use caution when driving or walking as surfaces begin to freeze as precipitation transitions from rain to sleet.
Be careful shoveling snow and take breaks as needed. Ask for help shoveling if you need it, offer help shoveling if you are able.
Precautionary/preparedness actions:
If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. In Illinois, the latest road
conditions can be obtained at www.gettingaroundillinois.com. In Missouri, the latest road conditions can be obtained at
traveler.modot.org/map or by calling 1-888-275-6636.
Persons should consider delaying all travel. Motorists should use extreme caution if travel is absolutely necessary.
Travel will become dangerous once the freezing rain begins. Travel is strongly discouraged unless it is an emergency. Avoid any downed power lines and be ready in case of a loss of power. Untreated roads and bridges, sidewalks, and parking lots will be treacherous.
It only takes a small amount of sleet to make roads, bridges, sidewalks and parking lots icy and dangerous. Plan for a slow trip
and use caution when approaching turns, bridges and overpasses. Remain alert for rapid changes in road conditions.
