Description

The Luminary is pleased to present its spring exhibition split my sides, featuring new and recent work by Lola Ayisha Ogbara and Amina Ross, on view from April 9 to July 16, 2022. The exhibition’s title derives from Maya Angelou’s poem and performance, “The Mask,” of which she writes to honor the "survival apparatus" performed by Black folks to conceal pain through laughter. Ogbara and Ross tend to this concealed space of the Black trans and feminine interior. Through the natural forms of ceramic sculpture and the digital registers of sound and film, they spatialize this interior into an emotional landscape with which we can engage. Their production of space contests the ground beneath our feet, freeing their position as they assert a sense of self. Join us on April 9 to celebrate the opening of their exhibition.
