Biography

Seventh Ward Alderwoman Alisha Sonnier is a public servant, mental health advocate, and visionary who is dedicated to community empowerment, social justice, and liberation. She is a born-and-raised St. Louisan. Alderwoman Sonnier got her start in community work as a frontline Ferguson activist and a leader of the Saint Louis University Clocktower Accords, which aimed to hold the university accountable for its historic role in the enslavement of Black St. Louisans.

Prior to her election to the Board in April 2023, Alderwoman Sonnier worked as a mental health advocate. She also served as a member of the Board of Education from 2021 to 2023, where she chaired the budget committee and helped to pass a district-wide wage increase for teachers and staff. Alderwoman Sonnier also helped facilitate the 87% passage of Proposition S in 2022, which distributed funding to improve the learning conditions at SLPS schools.

Alderwoman Sonnier is driven to public service by the reality that far too many young St. Louisans don't survive to age eighteen and that sustaining a healthy and happy family is an inaccessible luxury for too many of our residents. It can sometimes feel that our city has been built only for those who already have a secure and stable place in it - from historic divestment in youth and families to a lack of safe and affordable housing, from struggling businesses who are still recovering from a global pandemic to residents experiencing rising gun and vehicular/pedestrian violence. Alderwoman Sonnier is proud to represent #ALLNotSome in the Seventh Ward of the City of St. Louis.
