Overview, preparation and instructions to apply for a Hotel / Motel Business License
Hotel / Motel businesses require multiple business licenses.
Please read the following sections for more information below and be sure to follow each step on order.

If you are not sure if your business requires a Graduated Business License (GBL), please click the link "Business License Information", where you will find more information about licensing and a list of business types. Once you are there, click on the business type that describes the type of business you plan to do in the City of St. Louis.

Register with the State of Missouri for a State Sales Tax Number. Please obtain this number before visiting City Hall.

Visit the License Collector’s office in Room 104 of City Hall. The taxes on hotels, motels and rooming houses are as follows:
A. 3.5% Room Sales Tax - paid on a monthly basis on gross room sales of transient guests.
B. 3.75% Convention & Tourism Tax - paid on a quarterly basis on gross room sales of transient guests.
In addition to visiting the License Collector’s office, you will also need to obtain a clearance from the Collector of Revenue’s office at the location below:

You must also obtain an Occupancy Permit from the Building Division at the location below:

You must receive an annual permit. This permit will be forwarded to you by the building division once you have applied and been issued an occupancy permit. Your premises will be inspected each year by the Board of Public Service and you must present evidence of a current permit before you may review your annual license with us.

What to Expect
Once all clearances and payments are received, you will be able to obtain your license to do business in the City of St. Louis.
If you pay by check, the license application may be held for several working days until the check clears.
A separate Graduated Business License is required for each business location or trade name.
