The Records Custodian is responsible for requests for Medical Examiner records.

TITLE: Administrative Assistant I (Records Custodian)

FLSA STATUS:           Full-Time

SALARY RANGE:       $52,000 - $58,000

SHIFT:                       Monday – Friday, 8 am – 4 pm

CLOSING DATE:       June 15, 2026

 

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The Records Custodian is responsible for requests for Medical Examiner records. This position exercises considerable independent judgement, and professional and technical skills in the continuous review of requests for Medical Examiner documents. The Records Custodian is under the immediate Supervision of the Executive Director of Operations.  

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The Records Custodian is responsible for responding to requests for the release of Medical Examiner records. The ability to communicate and interact with family members, funeral service professionals, law enforcement and other agencies is essential. Will be responsible for a wide variety of duties, including but not limited to: data entry, editing and filing reports, copying, scanning, faxing, mailing, collect/process transcript payments and receipts, and cremation authorizations. Will be responsible for processing public record requests for Medical Examiner records through the GovQA portal.

 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

The Records Custodian must be proficient in Microsoft Office, Microsoft Word, Excel and Adobe. Ability to work independently in a detailed oriented, organized and efficient manner. Requires physically performing the essential functions of the job including the ability to lift and move file boxes. Intermediate knowledge must include medical terminology.

The position requires confidentiality and integrity of information; and communicate effectively orally and in writing. Strong attention to detail, telephone, typing, and computer skills are a requirement. Must have the ability to communicate and work effectively in an environment with frequent interruptions requiring the ability to concentrate and consistently produce work while responding to interruptions and changing priorities.

The Records Custodian must work as a team player and pick up additional tasks as needed in this busy urban Medical Examiner’s Office. Must maintain good communication with all members of the office. Will be expected to attending training as directed by the Executive Director of Operations.

St. Louis City is a drug and alcohol-free workplace. A pre-employment drug screen is required for all positions. Employment is contingent on successfully passing all appropriate background checks and drug screen. Incumbents are subject to random drug screen and alcohol tests as a condition of their employment.
