Nature of Work
This is physically demanding work in the maintenance and repair of equipment, grounds, and pipe work at the Water Division. The job includes using pneumatic equipment; cutting and replacing pipe; excavating; operating pumps, trucks, tractors, mowers and various sizes of vehicles; pavement breaking; using hand tools; pouring concrete and replacing asphalt; and maintaining and cleaning water settling basins.
Two years of recent full-time paid experience in construction. Experience in water or sewer line construction is preferred. Qualifying experience should indicate skill in the use of equipment such as engine driven pumps, power saws, jack hammers, air compressors, and related construction equipment.
License: Must possess and maintain a valid Missouri driver's license while employed by the City of St. Louis. Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of filing application and be able to present license at the time of the Performance Test. Please note type of license, number, class and expiration date on the Employment Application. Applicants who do not possess a Missouri driver's license will be required to present a "Driving Record Check" from their State's Department of Motor Vehicles.
To be eligible for veterans preference points, the applicant must submit a copy of his/her DD 214 Certificate of Release or discharge from Active Duty with the Employment Application or at the time of the Oral Interview. The Director of Personnel may, in his discretion, accept alternate documentation.
During the Performance Test, applicants must indicate skill in the following areas: Wheelbarrow/Concrete: Make a concrete mixture in a wheelbarrow and dump in a designated area; Pavement Breaker: Operate a Pavement breaker (Air tool); Excavation: Layout, excavate, and backfill an excavation 3'x2'x1'; Truck Driving: Perform a pre trip inspection, start and operate a truck through obstacles in a safe and controlled manner.
CHARACTER INVESTIGATION: These positions require candidates to pass a "Character Investigation" prior to appointment. The Director of Personnel may reject the application, or refuse to test and/or eliminate an applicant from an examination as otherwise permitted by law.
MEDICAL: A “Drug Screen” will be administered as part of the medical examination.
A limited number of the best qualified applicants may be scheduled for the Performance Test based on an evaluation of their experience and training as listed on the Employment Application. Applicants should be as detailed as possible when describing their experience including equipment, materials, and tools used relating to this position. Resumes will not substitute to a fully completed application. When completing the Employment History section of the application, include reasons for changes in employers and explain any gaps in employment. Incomplete and/or carelessly completed applications will not be considered.
