Nature of Work

Incumbents in this position are responsible for  overseeing the work of Animal Care and Control Officers in the field, kennel and office in order to uphold laws and regulations pertaining to pet ownership, and promote volunteer and developmental activities to encourage the humane treatment of animals.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science or a closely related field; plus one year of supervisory experience in an animal control or welfare agency, a veterinary clinic, private kennel, or animal care business handling a high volume of animal traffic.  OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Documentation of academic credentials must be submitted at the time of the Oral Interview.

License:  Must possess and maintain a valid Missouri driver's license while employed by the City of St. Louis.  Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of filing application and be able to present license at the time of the Oral Interview.  Please note type of license, number, class and expiration date on the Employment Application.  Applicants who do not possess a Missouri driver's license will be required to present a "Driving Record Check" from their State's Department of Motor Vehicles.

Note: Rabies Prophylaxis vaccination required after hire and, within six months of hire, must become a Certified Public Operator as defined by the Missouri Pesticide Use Act and complete the 24 hour HAZWOPER course.

A limited number of applicants may be scheduled for the Oral Interview based on an evaluation of their qualifying education, training and experience as listed on the Employment Application.  Include reasons for changes in employers and explain any gaps in employment.  Incomplete and/or carelessly completed applications will not be considered.  Resumes will not be accepted as a substitute to a fully completed application.

VETERAN'S PREFERENCE POINTS:  To be eligible for veteran's preference points, the applicant must submit a copy of his/her DD 214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty with the Employment Application or at the time of the Oral Interview. The Director of Personnel may, in his discretion, accept alternate documentation.
