Nature of Work
Incumbents in this position are responsible for planning, organizing, assigning, and supervising environmental health sanitation programs and staff and participating in after-hours disaster response teams to control environmental problems.

A Bachelor’s degree which includes at least 30 hours of basic science coursework and a math or statistics class; plus three years of experience working in environmental health. OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
License: Must possess and maintain a valid Missouri driver’s license while employed by the City of St. Louis. Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of filing application and be able to present it at the Oral Interview. Please note type of license, number, class and expiration date on the Employment Application. Applicants who do not possess a Missouri driver's license will be required to present a "Driving Record Check" from their State's Department of Motor Vehicles.
Certification: Must be able to obtain Registered Environmental Health Specialist/Registered Sanitarian Certification from the National Environmental Health Association within 11 months of hire as a condition of successfully completing working test period. Incumbents must also successfully complete training in Hotel, Motel and Childcare License Inspections, Certified Pool Operator Inspections and Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) during working test period.
An official transcript documenting qualifying educational achievement and coursework must be submitted with the application or at the time of the Oral Interview.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: A Master’s degree in Environmental Health from a program accredited by the National Environmental Health Science and Protection Accreditation Council. CEHT certification by NEHA. Previous supervisory experience.
A limited number of applicants may be scheduled for the Oral Interview based on an evaluation of their qualifying environmental health experience and academic achievement as listed on the Employment Application. Include reasons for changes in employers and explain any gaps in employment on the application. Incomplete and/or carelessly completed applications will not be considered. VETERAN'S PREFERENCE POINTS: To be eligible for veteran's preference points, the applicant must submit a copy of his/her DD 214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty with the Employment Application or at the time of the Oral Interview. The Director of Personnel may, in his discretion, accept alternate documentation.
