Nature of Work

Incumbents in these two (2) positions are responsible for providing legal representation and counsel to the City and supervising subordinate attorneys. The responsibilities of these positions will include supervising, planning, organizing, assigning and directing the work of attorneys in the Labor and Employment Unit and the Transactions Unit within the Law Department. The practice areas of these attorney managers and the attorneys supervised may include civil litigation, employment and labor matters, municipal contracts, pensions, municipal finance issues, legislative drafting and administrative law. The successful candidates will be responsible for the day-to-day management and oversight of the attorneys and for the overall performance of the units. The incumbents will report to a Deputy City Counselor and the City Counselor.

Minimum Qualifications

(OPEN TO PERMANENT CITY EMPLOYEES ONLY)

Graduation from a school of law approved by the American Bar Association; current membership in the Missouri Bar in good standing; plus seven years of progressively responsible legal practice in one of the above areas.

Law school transcripts and documentation of membership in the Missouri Bar must be submitted with the Employment Application or the time of the Oral Interview.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:  Some supervisory/management experience in a legal setting.

A limited number of applicants may be scheduled for the Oral Interview based on an evaluation of their qualifying education, training and experience as listed on the Employment Application.  Include reasons for changes in employers and explain any gaps in employment on the application.  Incomplete and/or carelessly completed applications will not be considered.  Resumes will not be accepted as a substitute to a fully completed application.

VETERAN'S PREFERENCE POINTS:  To be eligible for veteran's preference points, the applicant must submit a copy of his/her DD 214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty with the Employment Application or at the time of the Oral Interview.  The Director of Personnel may, in his discretion, accept alternate documentation.
