Nature of Work

Incumbents in this position are responsible for enforcing liquor laws and ordinances. Duties include investigating complaints, performing inspections, issuing summons and subpoenas, testifying in public hearings and in court, making arrests and seizing evidence. Positions require night, weekend and holiday assignments. Candidates must provide their availability for night and weekend assignments on the Availability Section of the Employment Application.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice Administration, Law Enforcement, or closely related field; OR an Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice Administration, Law Enforcement, or a closely related field; plus two years of recent experience in law enforcement or a related investigative field.  OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Age:  Due to Federal and State regulations, applicants must be at least 21 years of age at the time of filing application.

Licenses: Applicants must possess and maintain all of the following while employed by the City of St. Louis: a uniform exempt

St. Louis Private Security Officer License and a valid Missouri driver's license. Applicants who do not possess a uniform exempt

St. Louis Private Security Officer License must obtain it before completion of their working test period. Please note type of licenses, numbers and expiration dates on the Employment Application. 

Documentation of academic credentials must be submitted upon request.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:  Successful completion of a P.O.S.T. certified training program (minimum 600 hours) and Class A certification by the State of Missouri.  Previous liquor control/enforcement experience.  Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel.

A limited number of applicants may be scheduled for the Oral Interview based on an evaluation of their qualifying education, training and experience as listed on the Employment Application.  Resumes will not be accepted as a substitute to a fully completed application.  When completing the Employment History section of the application, include reasons for changes in employers and explain any gaps in employment.  Incomplete and/or carelessly completed applications will not be considered.

MEDICAL: Candidates will be required to pass an oral swab Drug Screen Test, Physical Examination and successfully complete a Psychological Examination as part of the Medical examination procedure. Incumbents are subject to random Drug Screen and Alcohol Tests without advance notice as a condition of their employment. 

VETERAN'S PREFERENCE POINTS:  To be eligible for veteran's preference points, the applicant must submit a copy of his/her DD 214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty with the Employment Application.  The Director of Personnel may, in his discretion, accept alternate documentation.
