Nature of Work

Incumbents in this position are responsible for entry-level work that will include reviewing contracts and drafts of various agreements and documents; preparing resolutions, legislation, regulations, reports, guidelines; and participating in various transactions. Incumbents work closely with other departments, divisions, boards and commissions on projects to foresee and advise as to protecting against legal risks; participate in Law Department projects such as City code revisions, participating in administrative proceedings, template document development, and making recommendations to senior management on legal issues or proposed changes in laws and regulations. An Attorney I reports to a manager or head of a unit/department and his/her work is closely managed. It may also involve monitoring matters handled by outside counsel.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from a school of law approved by the American Bar Association; current membership in the Missouri Bar in good standing or licensure in another state with eligibility for reciprocity in Missouri.  Documentation of license to practice law must be submitted with the Employment Application or upon request. A limited number of applicants may be scheduled for the Oral Interview based on an evaluation of their qualifying education, training and experience as listed on the Employment Application.  Resumes will not be accepted as a substitute to a fully completed application.  When completing the Employment History section of the application, include reasons for changes in employers and explain any gaps in employment.  Incomplete and/or carelessly completed applications will not be considered.

VETERAN'S PREFERENCE POINTS:  To be eligible for veteran's preference points, the applicant must submit a copy of his/her DD 214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty with the Employment Application or upon request.  The Director of Personnel may, in his discretion, accept alternate documentation.
