Nature of Work

Incumbents in this position are responsible for entry-level work that will include reviewing contracts and drafts of various agreements and documents; preparing resolutions, legislation, regulations, reports, guidelines; and participating in various transactions. Incumbents work closely with other departments, divisions, boards and commissions on projects to foresee and advise as to protecting against legal risks; participate in Law Department projects such as City code revisions, participating in administrative proceedings, template document development, and making recommendations to senior management on legal issues or proposed changes in laws and regulations. An Attorney I reports to a manager or head of a unit/department and his/her work is closely managed. It may also involve monitoring matters handled by outside counsel.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from a school of law approved by the American Bar Association; current membership in the Missouri Bar in good standing or licensure in another state with eligibility for reciprocity in Missouri.  Documentation of license to practice law must be submitted with the Employment Application or upon request. CITY RESIDENTS PREFERENCE POINTS: City residents who pass an examination for a position in the classified service and do not receive any other preference will receive a five (5) point preference on a scale of 100 points on the exam. An additional one (1) point shall be added to the passing score of City residents who receive any other preference on a scale of 100 points.  City residents must have resided in the City for at least one (1) year at the time of filing their application to be eligible for the preference points.
