Nature of Work

NATURE OF WORK

Incumbent in this position will serve as the City Emergency Management Agency's (CEMA) Public Information Officer, who will provide situational awareness to the Commissioner, while maintaining relationships with other city and regional public information officers and media contacts.  Duties include assisting the Commissioner across all phases of emergency management: prevention, preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation; coordinating the City of St. Louis Joint Information System to integrate incident information and public information into a cohesive organization, which is designed to provide consistent, coordinated, timely information during crisis or incident operations; managing the Joint Information Center during an incident that involves activation of the Emergency Operations Center or the City Unified Command Vehicle; drafting or updating emergency operating plans, writing and conducting tabletop/functional/full-scale exercises; also responsible for disseminating information utilizing social and traditional media, during press events, special events, and through community outreach and local emergency operations support.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Communications, Emergency Management, Safety Management, Risk Management, Business Administration, or a closely related field; plus two years of progressively responsible experience in public relations or emergency management with strong communication and presentation skills; OR, an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

CITY RESIDENTS PREFERENCE POINTS: City residents who pass an examination for a position in the classified service and do not receive any other preference will receive a five (5) point preference on a scale of 100 points on the exam. An additional one (1) point shall be added to the passing score of City residents who receive any other preference on a scale of 100 points. City residents must have resided in the City for at least one (1) year at the time of filing their application to be eligible for the preference points.
