Plants: Our garden covers 4 city lots. Since its beginning in 1985, The Lafayette Square Community Garden has had a perennial border with nectar plants. Those include: Rudbeckia fulgida (Black Eyed Susan) Echinacia purpurea (Purple Coneflower) Aster novae-angliae (New England aster) Alcea rose (Hollyhock) Phlox Asclepias syariaca Asclepia incarnate In 2014 and 2015 we increased the number of nectar plants by adding more Asclepias species and plants. This year 5 gardeners grew the annual Asclepias and we had a total of about 25 Asclepias curissavica plants. In summary, the types of Asclepias we grow in our community garden are: Milkweeds: Asclepias curissavica- annual Asclepias syriaca- perennial Asclepias incarnata- perennial Asclepias verticillata-whorled perennial This year, 2016, we grew these flowering annuals that are attractive to pollinators: Calendula Cleome hassleriana Hemerocallis (Daylily) Tagetes patula (Marigold) Lavendula (Lavender) Cupea (cigar plant) Ruta graveolens (Swallowtail rue) Passiflora incarnata (Passion Vine) Also in 2016 we added new herb beds and grew these herbs that pollinators like: Lavendula (Lavender) Origanum vulgare (Oregano) Salvia officinalis (Sage) Our community garden hosts a hive of Carpenter bees that live in our wooden pergola and feed on the Passion Vine that winds around the pergola. During the past fall migration of Monarch butterflies, we spotted about 20 – 25 Monarchs in the garden on one afternoon. We also host other butterflies as the attached photo of Painted Lady shows.
