Union/Lindell Boulevard Bridge Reconstruction Project

The intersection of Union and Lindell Boulevards, minor arterial streets, is supported on two independent bridge structures spanning Forest Park Parkway, an east-west principal arterial, and MetroLink light rail tracks.

Project Overview

The Union Boulevard/Lindell Boulevard Bridge is an important crossing near the northern boundary of Forest Park in Saint Louis, Missouri. Forest Park is one of the largest and most visited urban parks in the country and is home to destinations such as the Saint Louis Science Center, Art Museum, and Zoo, as well as the nationally-reconginzed academic medical center Barnes-Jewish Hospital. This area is a vital cultural, environmental, and academic pillar that supports the economic vitality of the St. Louis metropolitin area.

This project replaces two side-by-side bridges at the intersection of two arterial roads, Lindell Boulevard and Union Boulevard in Forest Park. These bridges span a major arterial road, Forest Park Parkway as well as eastbound and westbound MetroLink light rail tracks. This pair of bridge structures consists of two independent span structures; the first bridge that spans the MetroLink tracks was originally built in 1929 and the second bridge that spans Forest Park Parkway was originally built in 1961. Both bridges are rated as structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. Additionally, concrete barriers have been installed on the bridge to protect the underlying light rail and roadway, which restricts pedestrian and bicycle access through the area.
Approximately 60,000 vehicles and 310 light rail trips carrying tens of thousands of people travel on and under these structures per day. These crossings are critical to maintaining unimpeded vehicle/light rail traffic on the regional transportation system. This project aims to provide a reliable transportation system which can be depended upon by the traveling public, emergency responders, and the transit authority.

The reconstruction of this bridge will directly benefit the community and those that visit the area by increasing mobility, safety, and access for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists.
