The Compton Avenue Bridge Reconstruction Project is a federally supported transportation project in Saint Louis, Missouri.
Project Overview
Compton Avenue is a vital minor arterial road and transportation corridor in Midtown Saint Louis, Missouri, supporting multiple modes of transit. Spanning eleven (11) neighborhoods, it connects residents, workers, and visitors to essential destinations, including Saint Louis University and Hospital, Harris-Stowe University, Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital, and the Grand Center District. The Compton Avenue Bridge serves as a crucial north-south link, spanning a significant barrier of seven active railroad tracks operated by Union Pacific Railroad, Terminal Railroad, and MetroLink.
This project spans 0.41 miles of Compton Avenue, including the Compton Avenue Bridge, extending from Spruce Street in the north to Chouteau Avenue to the south. Originally built in 1911, with its foundation still in use, the bridge was reconstructed in 1965 and is now considered to be in poor condition. It lacks safe accommodations for cyclists and pedestrians, limiting connectivity and accessibility. The existing structure spans 28 feet and stretches 1,350 feet in length, featuring four vehicle lanes with no shoulders.
Reconstruction of the bridge will address critical safety and functionality concerns while promoting walking and bicycling, strengthening the city's multimodal transportation network. Phase 2 completes construction.

- Cycle track tie into existing eastbound and westbound Chouteau Avenue bicycle lanes
- Sharrows, also called shared lane markings, on Spruce Street
- Continental style crosswalks – crosswalks marked with thick vertical stripes
