Traffic Management Enhancement Project Phase 6 - Dr. Martin Luther King Drive Improvement Project
The City is launching a critical unfrastructure project focused on improving safety, accessibility, and traffic efficiency along Dr. Martin Luther King Drive
Project Overview
Dr. Martin Luther King Drive serves as an important transportation corridor in northern Saint Louis, Missouri. As a minor arterial road, it accommodates multiple modes of transportation which connects residents to essential goods, services, and destinations. This corridor links four (4) wards and eleven (11) neighborhoods, schools, firehouses, and Sherman Park.
The 3.75 miles of project corridor is on Dr. Martin Luther King Drive from Hodiamont Avenue on the west to Grand Boulevard to the east. There is a significant need to maintain and improve traffic management and safety within the City’s complex transportation network, including the reduction of motorists travel times and vehicle emissions. This project enhances the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) infrastructure to better facilitate traffic incident and congestion management actions undertaken by the Real-Time Transportation Intelligence Center (TIC).
The upgrade of this vital multimodal transport route will directly benefit the community and those that visit by increasing mobility, safety, and access to pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and transit users.
Project Objectives
Traffic Flow Improvements:
• Upgrade and modernization of traffic signal controllers and equipment at seven key intersections
• Traffic signal interconnection
• Traffic monitoring Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) Cameras linked to TIC
• Installation of fiber optic communications
• Replacement of outdated and non-compliant curb ramps
• Intersection improvements
• ADA upgrades
These enhancements aim to:
- Increase signal reliablility and coordination
- Improve pedestrian accessibility and safety
- Reduce traffic congestion through intelligent monitoring
- Promote equitable mobility across the community
This project represents a forward-thinking investment in our urban infrastructure and a commitment to creating a more connected, inclusive, and responsive transportation network.
