Marriage License

Information for how to apply for a new Marriage License, or how to obtain copies of Marriage Licenses at City Hall (1806-Present) for marriages which took place within the City of St. Louis.


License can be used for a ceremony in any Missouri County, including St. Louis City.

The Recorder of Deeds office provides same day marriage application and license issuance service and requires no appointment.

There are no residency, blood test, or waiting period requirements.

Before you come to City Hall to apply for a new Marriage License, be sure to keep the following in mind:

  • Couples must appear together (no marriage by proxy).
  • Couples must be at least 18 years of age (both parties).
  • Have proof of identity with a valid government issued ID (Passport, State ID, or Driver's License).
  • Wait 30-days after the finalization of a divorce and be able to provide the date of the divorce.
  • Blood relatives, up to and including First Cousins, are prohibited from being issued a Marriage License in the State of Missouri.
  • No blood test is required.
  • $48 fee will be due at the time of the application.


Apply for a new Marriage License

  • Both parties must at least be 18 years of age and appear together at the Marriage License Department at:
    • City Hall, Room 127, 1200 Market Street, St. Louis, MO 63103
    • Between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday (except Holidays).

  • At the time of the application, the couple must provide:
    • $48 Cash Nonrefundable Application Fee.
    • Proof of Identity (Driver's License, State ID Card, Passport)
    • Couple Information for Marriage License Application (Applications are Public Records in Missouri):
      • Current Name
      • Previous Surname (Last Name), if any
      • Age (as of last birthday)
      • Date of Birth
      • Place of Birth (state or foreign country)
      • Current Residence (street address, city, state, zip)
      • Current County of Residence
      • Number of This Marriage (first, second, etc.)
      • If Previously Married, Cause of Previous Marriage Ending (death or divorce)
      • If Previous Marriage Ended in Divorce, Date of Divorce
      • If Previous Marriage Ended with Death of Spouse, Date of Spouse's Death
      • Race
      • Number of Education Years Completed

Searching Old Marriage Licenses

To request the Recorders office complete a search for you,

  • Download and follow the instructions for form 1806 - Present Marriage Record Search
  • Search our online database of what is currently available in the index. The Recorders office is working daily to add old licenses into an index. 
  • Bring the form in person to the Marriage Records Department, City Hall, Room 127, 1200 Market Street, St. Louis, MO 63103
  • Arrive between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday (except Holidays).

Fees for a Marriage License Application

  • There is a non-refundable $48.00 per application
  • Fees are payable in advance of Marriage License services.
  • Both parties must be present at the office to apply for license.
  • No E-mail requests for Marriage Applications, please.

Fees for a Marriage License Copy

  • There is a non-refundable $12 fee.
  • When a record is found, your payment is used as a Copy Fee and you will be issued one computer generated Certified Copy of the record.
  • When a record is not found, your payment is used as a Search Fee.

Payment Methods and Fees:

  • A minimum fee of $1.50 is charged for any credit card payment under $52. For amounts over $52, the fee is calculated at 2.95% of the total payment amount.   
  • The service fee for electronic checks will be set at $1.50. This includes the ability to process payments via “Forte.”  Forte electronic check payment system:  
    • Validates the saving and checking account number real time.
    • Validates positive funds in the bank account at the time of the payment.
    • The product called ‘ATM Verify’ validates 95% of all US banks.
    • The City of St. Louis will received $.050 per transaction (to be deposited to the city's' designated bank account on a monthly basis.)
  • No cash back on any payments (debit card, credit card or check).

What to Expect

Once payment is received, the application process for a new Marriage License includes:

  • The applicant’s information is entered into the database by a Marriage License Clerk.
  • Verification by the applicant is required. The Marriage License Clerk prints a copy of the Application for the applicants to examine for accuracy and any changes necessary are made.
  • The couple signs the application and makes the following oath: "We hereby certify that the information provided is correct to the best of our knowledge and belief and that we are free to marry under the laws of this state."
  • After the Application is paid and completed, the Marriage License is issued.
  • Issued license can be used for a marriage ceremony in any Missouri County, including the City of St. Louis within 30 days of being issued.
    • Couples may apply and leave the Marriage License with the office for up to six months, to be picked up within 30 days of the marriage date.
