The St. Louis Agency on Training and Employment (SLATE) will conduct a Construction Information Session for job seekers interested in a career as an iron worker. The event will take place on Tuesday, January 7, at 10 a.m. at SLATE Missouri Career Center (MCC), 1520 Market Street, 1st Floor Conference Room, St. Louis, MO 63103. SLATE has partnered with Iron Workers Local No. 396 and the Association for Construction Careers, Education and Support Services (ACCESS) to offer this informational event.
At the information session, counselors from the Iron Workers Local No. 396 Construction Training School will explain details of their apprenticeship program, answer questions about the application process, and provide career guidance and networking opportunities.
Iron worker apprentices receive four years of preparation combining on-the-job training with 160 hours each year of classroom training. Apprentices must be at least 18 years old, have a high-school diplomas or equivalent, and must attend a two-week pre-apprenticeship class, where they will take tests, do assignments and establish a score. That class score will be added to an interview score and candidates will be selected by rank.
Iron workers set and bolt together steel beams to form the structural framework of many high-rise buildings. They were instrumental in helping build the Gateway Arch and laying rebar that provides structural support for the great roadways and bridges essential to our transportation needs.
Iron workers must possess excellent balance and be able to work at all heights. They must follow safety rules to ensure safety for themselves and their co-workers.
Construction industry sector jobs are predicted to grow significantly between now and 2016. Lots of iron worker apprentices will be needed to satisfy the workforce requirements to complete a growing number of major St. Louis area construction projects. Anticipated developments include Ballpark Village, Cortex, BJC Headquarters, Lord & Taylor, Wells Fargo, Mercedes, Northside Regeneration, Carondolet Coke, and The City Walk, among others.
