Kendra Simpkins came to SLATE seeking a career in Healthcare. She was undecided about which medical occupation to select, and was offered an assessment, career guidance, and an opportunity to explore various no cost healthcare certifications available at SLATE, under WIOA federal grant. Ultimately, Kendra decided on training for the Certified Medical Assistants program through Bell- Brown Medical Institute - St. Louis, MO.
Kendra's Training Advisor, Juanita Jones, admired Kendra's dedication and enthusiasm to complete her assignments and graduate from the program in the spring of 2019. Simpkins' hard work has paid off as she was offered a job during her clinicals! She is now working at BJC.
At SLATE, Simpkins also took advantage of the Advancing Career Pathway Employment Outcomes Pilot Program, offered through our partnership with W. K. Kellogg Foundation, Family and Workforce Centers of America, and Early Explorers Child Development Academy. The program provides participants with intensive case management, life coaching, and incentives as they complete various milestones leading to training completion and employment.
Simpkins has worked with Jones to develop a life plan toward a brighter future for herself and her family. She will continue working toward her larger goals in education and training, career advancement, financial stability and security, her child's education and development, self care and health, as well as building a network of support from family and friends.
“Kendra embraced every challenge with relish, and has found the success through hard work and dedication,” said Jones.
SLATE offers WIOA funding opportunities for eligible adults, ages 18+, interested in training for a new career. Training opportunities exist for everyone, and for every in-demand occupation.
