Plans, organizes, monitors, manages, and evaluates economic development project activities.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include coordinating, directing, and implementing programs and projects that support residential, commercial and industrial development; workforce development; the attraction of and assistance to neighborhood businesses; small business development initiatives; and/or other economic development, redevelopment, or capital improvement programs or projects.

Essential Job Functions

  • Oversees the Strategic Development Department. Ensures the strategy, resources, and work align with the overall organizational strategy.
  • Oversight includes management of the neighborhood development team with project managers
  • tasked to identify, direct, and coordinate neighborhood economic development initiatives.
  • Directs and manages the requests for proposals for complex development projects.
  • Directs and oversees grant submission and management
  • Coordinates agreement implementation including activities related to legislative actions.
  • Establishes and maintains close cooperation with appropriate public and private business and community organizations, departments, boards, agencies and individuals involved in economic and related development activities; conducts community outreach when appropriate for planning and implementing economic development activities.
  • Responds to inquiries and provides information regarding City economic development and development project activities, and other related matters; attends meetings; serves on committees as assigned; participates in discussions regarding economic development; and serves as a liaison to potential investors, developers, local businesses, and the public at large.
  • Neighborhood business retention and attraction
  • Identify and track key vacancies and identify potential tenants
  • Maintain regular contact with key businesses and/or business organizations to provide support when needed
  • Identify key blocks or properties for redevelopment and engage community around potential uses
  • Facilitate site assembly for neighborhood redevelopment (working with SLDC Real Estate, neighborhood partners and/or developers)
  • Work with internal and external partners to create development concepts, develop marketing material, issue RFPs, identify and contact potential developers

Qualifications

  • Qualifications include a minimum of a B.A./B.S. in business finance, business administration, economic development, or related field with a Maters Degree preferred.
  • 5+ years’ experience in economic development or related field.
  • Knowledge of design, construction, government funded projects, environmental engineering (Brownfield management), grant administration, and economic development project management and development financing techniques and tools.
  • Must be resourceful and possess good organizational skills, knowledge of city government, and the ability to implement policy.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; computer proficiency Prior experience managing professional level employees a must.
  • Proven ability to work with public officials, government agencies and general public a must.
