ST. LOUIS – As part of Project Connect’s continuing effort to pair people with opportunities, its partners in the construction industry are hosting a daylong expo to introduce interested community members to job opportunities.

The event will be held Monday, May 22, 2017, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the former Rhema Church on the future site of the Next NGA West campus at 2233 Cass Ave.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, hiring for construction laborers and helpers is projected to grow 13 percent between 2014 and 2024 – faster than the average for all other occupations. Work on the Next NGA West site alone is projected to create 1,350 construction jobs.

“There are many avenues to build a life-long career in a construction trade,” said Len Toenjes, President, AGC of Missouri. “With the growth we are seeing right here in St. Louis and across the country, it is important that we have a diverse and talented employee base to fill these jobs. We in the construction industry are actively seeking to educate and reach out to potential employees and contractors and are very willing to train people interested and dedicated in building a new career for themselves.”

Individuals attending the Expo can connect with pre-apprenticeship programs, apprenticeship programs, construction trade schools, contractor associations, unions and contractors. Pursuing a career in the construction industry through one of these avenues can offer a reliable path to upward mobility.

Also recognizing that some people may have barriers to employment to overcome, partner agencies like the National Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse will provide contact information for help, and the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department’s Intervention and Compliance Unit and St. Louis Agency on Training and Employment (SLATE) will be in attendance to offer assistance.

Monday’s expo will give individuals an opportunity to learn about the construction industry, discover different pathways to landing a job within the industry, and to determine if a career in construction is a good personal fit.

Representatives from the following organizations will be in attendance:

AGC of Missouri - American Trade School - ASA Midwest - Bricklayers Local 1 - Building Union Diversity (BUD) - Cement Mason's Local 527 - City of St. Louis Board of Aldermen - IBEW/NECA Electrical Apprenticeship Training Program - Iron Worker's Union - Job Corps - Laborer's Union - Mechanical Contractors Association - Minority Business Council - MOKAN - Operating Engineers Union - Painters and Allied Trades DC 58 - Painting and Decorating Foundation - Plumbers & Pipefitters Union - Plumbing Industry Council - Ranken Technical College - SITE Improvement Association - St. Louis Agency on Training and Employment (SLATE) - St. Louis & Kansas City Carpenters Regional Council - St. Louis Community College - St. Louis Council of Construction Consumers - St. Louis Development Corporation - St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department - Tilesetter’s Local 18 - Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis
