ST. LOUIS –Work on the Kingshighway Bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) tracks between Southwest/Vandeventer and Shaw Avenues has encountered unknown underground utilities along with adverse weather conditions, which is slowing progress.
Navigating around the utilities has impacted work on the drainage system used for the bridge, roadways and other new construction. The limited availability of the lightweight fill material has also created delays with its placement which has impacted the project schedule.
Weather also has impacted the construction of the pre-cast concrete retaining walls forming the approaches to the bridges over Daggett, as well as the bridge over UPRR.
The retaining walls are constructed and anchored into lightweight fill to prevent settlement damage to buildings around the new Kingshighway bridge. The cement-like material weighs less than 20 percent of conventional earth fill but has similar weather sensitivity to normal concrete, so rain and cold weather affect when placement can occur. Work will continue through the winter months as weather conditions permit.
Work on each bridge continues to progress. The concrete deck for the Daggett bridge has been constructed and cured. The main girders for the bridge that spans over UPRR are in place as of today and the installation of the intermediate bracing is currently in progress. Work will also continue with the completion of the approach walls and the placement of the lightweight fill material to the subgrade elevation, the placement of roadway drainage structures/piping and the completion of the water main.
Crews will then lay pavement between the bridges. The concrete work on the approaches is also weather sensitive, and work will progress as weather permits.
After all changes, a new goal has been set to open four lanes of Kingshighway by April 15, 2017. Work on the outer lanes and the reconstruction of Shaw (east of Kingshighway) will continue thereafter with the goal to complete the entire project by the end of July 2017.
