Authors at Your Library Series - July 2016

The St. Louis Public Library is proud to present author Joe Posnanski at Central Library, 1301 Olive Street, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 11.  Posnanski will read from and sign copies of his book,The Soul of Baseball: A Road Trip Through Buck O’Neil’s America.  The program is FREE and open to the public.  Books will be available for purchase courtesy of Amber Bookstore. This event is part of Read St. Louis, a collaboration between the St. Louis Public Library and the St. Louis County Library. This is the third of five books we will enjoy this year.

When legendary Negro League player Buck O’Neil asked sports columnist Joe Posnanski how he fell in love with baseball, Posnanski had to think about it. From that question was born the idea behind The Soul of Baseball.  Posnanski and the 94-year-old O’Neil decided to spend the 2005 baseball season touring the country in hopes of stirring up the love that first drew them to the game.

This book is as much the story of Buck O’Neil as it is the story of baseball. In a time when disillusioned, steroid-using athletes define the sport, Buck O’Neil stands out as a man that truly played for the love of the game.

A sports columnist for the Kansas City Star, Joe Posnanski is a two-time winner of the AP Sports Columnist of the Year Award—the nation’s most prestigious sports writing honor. He has been nominated 15 times for awards by the Associated Press Sports Editors.
