St. Louis Public Library's Authors @ Your Library October lineup features small press, indie authors, the supernatural and illustrators

 

         The St. Louis Public Library's Authors @ Your Library series for October features Robert Olen Butler, Indie Author Day, Neil Swaab, Small Press Expo, Jeff Belanger and an Author Shout-Out!

         Pulitzer Prize-winning author Robert Olen Butler discusses and signs his 17th novel, Perfume River, on October 6 at 7 p.m.at the Schlafly Branch.


         Perfume River is a lyrical and emotional exploration of one family drama that echoes the lives of so many who are affected by the aftermath of the Vietnam War. It is a profound and poignant book written by an author at the height of his powers, a portrait of family, personal choice and how war resonates through the American experience.

         Inaugural Indie Author Day: The Pros (and Potential Pitfalls) of Self-Publishing comes to SLPL on October 8 at 4 p.m. at Central Library.


         St. Louis Public Library joins more than 200 other libraries across North America to celebrate Indie Author Day, an event designed to bring local writing communities together to participate in author panels, book readings and signings, workshops, presentations and more.


         St. Louis local Nicole Evelina (Daughter of Destiny, Been Searching for You), Svetlana Grobman, from the Columbia Public Library (The Education of a Traitor: A Memoir of Growing Up in Cold War Russia), and SLPL's own Joe Schwartz (The Games Men Play, Ladies and Gentlemen: Adam Wolf and the Cook Brothers) discuss their forays into self-publishing, answer questions and sign books.

         Author Neil Swaab visits on October 10 at 6:30 p.m. at Buder Branch to discuss his illustrated novel, The Secrets to Ruling School (Without Even Trying).


         Swaab's book has been selected as the Fall 2016 Reading Pays –Pass it On! title.


         Kids in Grades 3-6 can get a free copy of The Secrets to Ruling School (Without Even Trying) at any St. Louis Public Library location, while supplies last.

         Swaab is a freelance illustrator, art director and cartoonist. In addition to writing and illustrating books for kids, he is an adjunct professor in the Illustration Department of Parsons New School for Design in New York.

         The 3rd annual Small Press Exp oreturns on October 15 from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Central Library.


         Members of the area's small press community will be selling their wares, publishers will be exhibiting new and exciting work, and Central Library will have plenty of resources for budding creators.

         In the spirit of all things Halloween, spend A Supernatural Afternoon With Jeff Belanger on October 22 at 3 p.m. at Central Library.


         Belanger discusses his night spent at the Lemp Mansion and his attempt to meet and hopefully communicate with the many discarnate souls rumored to dwell within. An author, adventurer and one of the most visible paranormal researchers today, Belanger is the founder of the new Legend Tripping movement and is the Emmy-nominated host, writer and producer of the PBS series, New England Legends. 


         He signs his book, World's Most Haunted Places, immediately following his presentation.

         The 2nd Annual Author Shout-Out! takes place October 29 at 2 p.m. at Central Library.


         Author Amanda Doyle delivers the Keynote Address. Her book, Finally, A Locally Produced Guidebook, by and for St. Louisans, Neighborhood by Neighborhood, explores the definitive tastes of the varied communities that intertwine our local culture.


         After Doyle's presentation, every ten minutes a local author----Denise Bogard, Floyd Boykin, Jr., L.M. Dougherty, Seth Ferranti, Rich Fuegner, Jennifer Geist (publisher), Natalie Gensits, LaShaunda Hoffman, Alicia Howard, Cassondra Lenoir, Ed Protzel, Raechel Rivers, Angela Skurtu, Daniel Smith, Tawanda Story, Paul Thiel and Steve Wiegenstein---- takes the podium to discuss their work, its challenges and share the interesting real stories that inspire their work
