National Night Out (NNO) was instituted in 1984 to generate support and participation in local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back against crime. Since that time St. Louis has joined in recognizing National Night Out on the first Tuesday in August, despite extreme summer heat and conflicts with the City's local elections.

In 2017, Alderwoman Carol Howard introduced Board Bill No. 53, which proposed following the lead of Texas and Florida which moved their respective National Night Out observances to the first Tuesday in October to avoid dangerous summer heat. The bill passed. Therefore, starting in 2018, and reoccurring annually, the Department of Public Safety will organize and hold the City of St. Louis' National Night Out on the first Tuesday of October.

Neighborhood organizations and block units will be able to register their NNO Party locations with the City as in past years.  Registration will open later this month. Please check the National Night Out page on the stlouis-mo.gov website for more information.
