Trailnet's September Car-Free Challenge

Trailnet encourages participation in the September Shift Your Commute Car-Free Challenge to recognize multi-modal use and the need for a more livable St. Louis.

Shift Your Commute is a free tool for individuals and teams to log their car-free commutes to and from work. As participants log trips each day, the tool calculates calories burned and carbon emissions saved to help participants stay motivated. Since 2011, Shift Your Commute participants have made 70,000 trips for a total of 416,000 miles. Every trip makes a difference-- for your health, the environment, and the economy.

Trailnet is thrilled to see more and more of St. Louis residents engage in healthy, active initiatives and calls for members of the community to take it one step further. Participants in the challenge demonstrate positive changes and make them known to the City. Showing the City trips made on bike, foot, Metrolink or bus and carbon emissions saved strengthens Trailnet's work to create more livable communities and safe streets in St. Louis for all.

Recent news has highlighted an increased interest and concern for bicyclist and pedestrian safety. According to the Statewide Traffic Accident Records System for Missouri, 233 cyclists and pedestrian were killed and 4,862 were injured from 2011 to 2013. In an effort to decrease crash rates, Trailnet programs focus on working with communities on bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, providing bicycle education courses and programs, and creating and passing policies that create safer environments for people on bike and foot.

Celebrate and learn more about the September Challenge at the SYC Kickoff Happy Hour on Wednesday, August 27, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Urban Chestnut Brewing Company in Midtown. Trailnet staff will be on hand for questions on safe commuting, rules and statutes pertaining to bicycling, and the logistics of traveling car-free.
