Tuskeegee Airmen to be Honored with Art Exhibition

ST. LOUIS PUBLIC LIBRARY TO HONOR THE TUSKEGEE AIRMEN WITH AN ART EXHIBIT AND RECEPTION WITH ONE OF THE ORIGINAL AIRMEN

The St. Louis Public Library is proud to salute courage, triumphs, and sacrifices of the Tuskegee Airmen with a very special art exhibit and reception with one of the original airmen. The events are FREE and open to the public.

            During World War II the African-American fighter pilots of the 332nd Fighter Group overcame racial discrimination and distinguished themselves as expert pilots.

            The exhibit, Purple Hearts: A Tribute to Tuskegee Airmen, features the oil paintings of William Curtis.  The exhibit runs May 2-31 at the Schlafly Branch, 225 N. Euclid Ave., Monday – Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m.

            Original Tuskegee Airman and St. Louis resident Captain Christopher Newman meets guests during a special reception for the Purple Hearts exhibit at the Schlafly Branch, 225 N. Euclid Ave., on May 3, from 6-7 p.m. Newman's military honors include the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Purple Heart. He is a veteran of 84 WWII missions and over 90 in the Korean War.
