The Botanical Heights Neighborhood Playground had been built on the site of a former 1932 Thurman-Blaine filling station. The site also contained the Schneider Ambrose Auto Repair service at the rear of the filling station. SLDC received a $960,000 grant for the Brownfields Cleanup Fund, provided through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. A $25,000 sub-grant was awarded to the Garden District Commission to cover certain costs associated with removing underground storage tanks and petroleum-impacted soil.

A Geoprobe prepares to take soil and groundwater samples on the site. Soil samples for benzene, ethylbenzene, naphthalene, xylenes, or total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH)-gasoline range organics (GRO), as well as lead concentrations, had previously exceeded default target levels defined by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. SLDC and the Garden District Commission continue to work with the MDNR to achieve regulatory closure of the site.
