LTC01
Before construction of Love’s Travel Stop, the 12-acre site contained a tire shop, a scrap/salvage yard and metal recycling facility, and a few dilapidated houses. Numerous recognized environmental conditions existed prior to cleanup and redevelopment. Soil samples showed concentrations of mercury, arsenic, barium, cadmium, lead, selenium, PCBs, TPH-GRO, benzene and naphthalene, all of which were above the default target levels (DTLs). Groundwater samples showed contamination by arsenic, benzene and naphthalene, also above their DTLs.

An aerial visual of the property, with the boundary indicated. Adjacent properties include a former auto wrecking facility and numerous facilities that manufactured commercial laundry, soap, and paint. The industrial nature of the area and high risk of contamination made rehabilitating or redeveloping the site for continued residential use untenable.

Hy-Way Tires was the last remaining business situated on the site. The tire shop sits atop a former Amoco gas station. Past history indicated a leaking underground storage tank (LUST) incident, resulting in petroleum-impacted soil and groundwater, including light non-aqueous phase liquids (LNAPL).

One of the few remaining houses left on the site. Like some of the other residences, conditions at this abandoned home had been deteriorating for years.

The Love’s Travel Center while under construction. It was the first business to open as part of a redevelopment effort for St. Louis’ North Riverfront Commerce Corridor. The St. Louis Development Corporation helped finance the project by allocating federal New Market Tax Credits for Love’s development.

Love's Travel Stop
The January 2014 opening of Love’s Travel Stop kicked off the Oklahoma-based company's 50th anniversary. Love's worked with the St. Louis Agency on Training and Employment (S.L.A.T.E.) to hire employees. Residents in the neighboring 63147 and 63107 zip codes were given the first invites to employment sessions, and Subway boasts that 90 percent of hires were from those two zip codes.
