Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Honored by Board of Aldermen

AKAThis past week, the Board of Aldermen welcomed the 84th Central Regional Conference of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. to St. Louis.

The weekend of activities began with a cleanup of Tandy Park, located across the street from Sumner High School, in the Ville neighborhood. It was followed by an honors ceremony dedicated to the AKA sorority’s principal founder and St. Louis native, Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, a 1904 graduate of Sumner High School.

On April 5, Board of Aldermen President Lewis E. Reed, 4th Ward Aldermen Sam Moore and 19th Ward Alderwoman Marlene Davis presented a resolution honoring their founder at Sumner High School. Following the program, a wing of the high school was dedicated to the founder of AKA, Ethel Hedgeman Lyle.  

The conference brought in nearly 3,000 visitors to St. Louis.
