The Department of Health  held its 1st Annual Welcome Winter Be Ready Event Wednesday, December 19th.

All attendees received a bag to collect brochures and items to build an Emergency Preparedness Kit for their own home.  As well as building their own kit, many experts were available to discuss safety tips for winter, disaster and emergency preparedness, and winter health related topics.

There was something for everyone. Kids learned what they could do to help their families prepare for emergencies as well as information for adults on childhood asthma.  Two other important topics covered were diabetes disaster preparedness and preparation of emergency food kits for those on dialysis.

Not to be left out, tips for preparing our furry family members for emergency situations was also covered in the brochures.  OpSPOT was there to offer information on free straw and dog houses for those dogs that must be outside this winter. You can call your nearest shelter to ask about the availability of straw and dog houses.

We look forward to seeing everyone at next year's event.  Let's help each other have a safe and healthy winter.
