Community Information Network (CIN)

The City of St. Louis civic network that began in 1995 as a network that provided public access to digital resources and community information, web hosting, and included email and dialup services.

Overview

The Community Information Network was established in 1995 as one of the City of St. Louis Empowerment Zone / Enterprise Community funded Programs.  Over the years CIN provided, at no cost to its users, community web hosting, neighborhood information kiosks, dial-up Internet connections, email services, Internet literacy training, and served as the repository of a broad range of information that supported citywide community development and stabilization efforts.

History

The Missouri Research and Education Network (MOREnet), a unit of the University of Missouri, based in Columbia, MO provided the technical support and infrastructure for the duration of the program from 1996 to 2011.

As the Internet age matured and more service option became available, CIN services changed leading to the final decision to end services on June 30, 2011.

Conclusion

It's been and honor and a privilege to serve the citizen of the City of St. Louis with the activities and services offered through the Community Information Network initiative.
