20th Street Multimodal Improvements

The 20th Street Multimodal Improvement Project is a federally supported transportation project in St. Louis, Missouri.

Project Overview

20th Street has emerged as a key transportation corridor in central-east St. Louis, Missouri. This project connects two (2) wards and three (3) neighborhoods to essential goods, services, and destinations, including the new National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency West Campus (NGA-West), St. Louis Place, Desoto Park, Pruitt Military Academy, Gateway Middle and KIPP Schools, and Homer G. Phillips Hospital. By improving transit access to schools, businesses, and neighborhoods, this project addresses key mobility and safety concerns identified by residents and businesses.

The 1.64-mile project corridor runs along 20th Street from St. Louis Avenue in the north-to-North Market Street in the south, and along North Market Street from 20th Street in the east to 23rd Street in the west. The existing bicycle infrastructure on 20th Street is inadequate for future transportation needs and currently creates a high-stress environment for cyclists. In an area where 41% of residents rely on transit, this project bridges the gap between Downtown and North St. Louis by establishing a low-stress multimodal corridor that benefits the entire community. It also connects Great Rivers Greenway’s (GRG) Chouteau Greenway, the City’s planned cycle track ending at Market Street, and designated bicycle routes along Chestnut Street, Olive Street, Washington Avenue, and St. Louis Avenue.
