Let's Move! STL Weekend

For the Health Promotion, Education, and Marketing division within the Health Department, May started out with a bang of Let's Move! STL activities. Thursday, May 7th, marked the second week for the 4th Annual Let's Move! STL Golf and Walk Program. The event is hosted by the City of St. Louis Department of Health and the East Side Health District at the beautiful Grand Marais Golf Course. The free program runs every Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. through June 25th and includes instruction from PGA golf professional Dan Polites, snacks, health information, and an opportunity to get a one- or two-mile walk in. All ages and golfing abilities are encouraged to come out and play or walk.

The next afternoon, May 8th, was loaded with fun and dance at the Let's Move! STL So You Got Moves Flash Mob. In partnership with Saint Louis Public Schools, BJC School Outreach and Youth Development, and the Missouri Foundation for Health, the afternoon focused on fitness and health in school-aged children. Melba Moore, Acting Director/Commissioner of Health presented a proclamation on behalf of Mayor Slay to representatives from the school district, declaring May 8th as "Saint Louis Public Schools Let's Move! STL Day." More than 14,800 students and 1,200 adults (teachers, staff, and parents) performed Beyoncé's "Move Your Body" dance routine.

The following morning, Saturday, May 9th, Let's Move! STL was represented at the American Heart Association's Annual Heart Walk. The walk is designed to promote physical activity and heart healthy living for the whole family. It is the American Heart Association's premiere fundraising event to help raise awareness, educate, and increase research around issues associated with heart disease and stroke, two leading killers in America.
