Last month, Soldiers' Memorial Superintendent Lynnea Magnuson invited Sarah Gamblin-Luig, Communications Center Coordinator of the City Emergency Management Agency, to participate in a wreath laying ceremony at Soldiers' Memorial.  Gamblin-Luig performed a touching rendition of Taps.  That experience has moved Gamblin-Luig to volunteer for Bugles Across America, the organization that provides live Taps to veterans for memorial services and other events.

Bugles Across America, NFP was founded in 2000 by Tom Day, when Congress passed legislation stating that Veterans have a right to at least two uniformed military people to fold the flag and play Taps on a CD player.  Day felt that a recording of Taps was not sufficient to properly pay tribute to the sacrifice and service these veterans have given for their country, so he founded Bugles Across America (BAA).  BAA now has more than 7,500 bugler volunteers located in all 50 states and a growing number overseas.

Bugler volunteers can be male or female.  They can play a traditional bugle with no valves, or they can perform the ceremony on a Trumpet, Cornet, Flugelhorn, or a 1, 2 or 3 valved bugle.  The bugler can be of any age as long as he or she can play the 24 notes of Taps with an ease and style that will do honor to the Veterans, their families, and the burial detail performing the service.
