African Arts Film Festival 2011

St. Louis Public Library will present its 8th Annual African Arts Film Festival in conjunction with the 20th Annual St. Louis African Arts Festival.

The St. Louis Public Library will continue its longstanding partnership with the African Heritage Association of St. Louis.  The 20th Annual St. Louis African Arts Festival takes place in Forest Park on Memorial Day Weekend. This year's theme is "Celebrating the Past and the Present: A 20-Year Journey."

As part of the celebration, the Library will host its 8th Annual St. Louis African Arts Film Festival at the Schlafly Branch, 225 N. Euclid Ave., on May 28 from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The program is FREE and open to the public. This year's Film Festival includes the following thought-provoking films:

 

*9:30-10:30 a.m.

Ainsi Meurent Les Anges(And So Angels Die). A Senegalese poet confronts the cross-cultural and psychological pressures of being at home neither in Europe nor in Africa. (French and Wolof with English subtitles.)

 

*10:35-11:25 a.m.

Monday's Girls. The conflict between modern individualism and traditional society is seen through the eyes of two young Niger Delta women.

 

*11:30 a.m.-1:10 p.m.

La Genese (Genesis). The Bible story of Jacob and Esau is used to explore civil wars from Liberia to Somalia and from Congo to Kosovo. (Bambara with English subtitles.)

 

*1:15-2:15 p.m.

Liberia: A Fragile Peace. A chronicle of Liberia from the departure of Charles Taylor to the election of Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, the first African woman head of state, the film examines the difficulties of rehabilitating a nation destroyed by war.

 

*2:15-3:35 p.m.

La Vie Est Belle (Life is Rosy). Soukous music legend Papa Wemba stars in the rags-to-riches story of a poor country musician who seeks fame in the vibrant music industry of Kinshasa. (French with English subtitles.)

 

*3:40-5:15 p.m.

Guimba the Tyrant. This historical allegory tells the tale of a tyrant who is overthrown. (Bambara and Peul with English subtitles.)
