St. Louis City and County Libraries Kick-Off annual effort to encourage reading and discussion of great books.

Last month officials from St. Louis City and county libraries kicked off the 2011 Read Saint Louis program. The purpose of this joint effort between the city and county libraries is to encourage St. Louisans to read and discuss great books. Mayor Francis G. Slay and County Executive Charlie Dooley serve as Read Saint Louis Honorary Co-Chairs.
The 2011 Read Saint Louis selected books are:
- "A Widow's Story" by Joyce Carol Oates
- "When the Thrill is Gone" by Walter Mosley
- "The Giver" by Lois Lowry
- "The Good Soldier" by David Finkel
- "Freedom" by Jonathan Franzen
St. Louis County Library and St. Louis Public Library will host events with each of the featured authors, along with a variety of programs, activities, and discussions designed around each book.
The Read Saint Louis events will kick-off at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 4 with a visit by Joyce Carol Oates to St. Louis County Library, Headquarters. Check the St. Louis County and St. Louis Public Library websites for details about upcoming 2011 Read Saint Louis events.
