Work to improve the eastbound access to St. Louis Lambert International Airport’s (STL) Terminal Two (T2) and its garage begins Monday, May 23. The project creates an additional entrance lane from Lambert International Boulevard (LIB) for eastbound traffic. Included in this project is a new T2 garage entrance. We expect the left turn out of Air Cargo Drive to LIB will be closed during this first week of work.

What’s involved?

Primarily Southwest passengers use the entrance to the complex. The design of this T2 project eliminates the current outbound lanes from Air Cargo Road and creates an additional entrance lane from eastbound LIB. The result will be three left turn entrance lanes from eastbound LIB to T2. There will be no changes to westbound LIB.

This project includes construction of a T2 garage entrance closer to the inbound intersection so vehicles will not have to enter T2’s arrivals/departures traffic flow. After the project’s completion, the existing westbound Air Cargo Road traffic will use the terminal’s departures through lanes to exit the T2 area.

There will be additional work on the departure drive exit at the LIB intersection. This will eliminate a structural depression in the roadway at the intersection of T2’s Departures Drive and LIB.

Finally, with this ongoing work, MetroLink will create a parking pad for their service vehicles on the Lambert International Boulevard turn-off into the T1 departure level. A lane restriction is planned for that portion of airport roadway that will last for a total of seven days.

How will the construction affect STL traffic?

With the reconstruction of the T2 entrance from LIB, traffic flow will be impacted. STL will be reducing westbound LIB to a single lane at certain times. At specific points in the project, the eastbound turn lanes into the terminal complex will be reduced to one lane.

The project’s timetable:

The projected time for completion of this improved eastbound access and new garage entrance at T2 is sometime in mid-Autumn. This work is one portion of a multi-phase project, originally part of a 2017 airport bond proposal. The project’s first phase included a second lane on T2’s Arrivals Drive for use by both private and commercial traffic and a T2 garage entrance for westbound LIB traffic.

The airport’s goal is to improve the passenger experience at T2, which is home to Southwest Airlines at STL. Currently, Southwest provides service to almost 62 percent of all the travelers that use STL.
