COVID-19 Data

The latest novel coronavirus COVID-19-related data and maps for the City of St. Louis

Note: As of 6/23/2020 the case data has been recalculated to reflect updated definitions of confirmed and probable cases.

Data is updated on a continual basis and is therefore subject to change. Sometimes through case investigation the DOH learns that an individual actually lives outside of the City, so they may be transferred to the appropriate jurisdiction. Likewise, other jurisdictions may transfer cases to the City. So case count totals and underlying data will be dynamic to reflect the most current information.

Daily Change Chart

Note: Showing daily change by date case was tested. Deaths are shown on the date the death was reported.

Results for the last 14 days are preliminary and subject to change.

Case count totals shown in this graph represent specimen collection date, in other words, the day the individual was tested for COVID-19. There is a lag between when an individual is tested and when results are available, therefore the data is subject to change as new information becomes available. This also explains why recent dates do not have many (or any) cases listed, because cases that the DOH learns about are shown on the graph in previous days - when the person went for testing. Reproductive Number Chart

Note: Reproductive numbers for the last 14 days are preliminary and subject to change.

The Reproductive Number (R0, pronounced "R naught") is an estimation of how many people a COVID-19 positive case will transmit the virus to, on average. When R0 is above 1 the epidemic is expected to grow exponentially. For example, if R0=2 each case will infect 2 other people on average, and those two will infect 4 more people, who infect 8 more, then 16, and so forth. When the R0 equals 1 the epidemic will maintain itself, neither increasing or decreasing. And when R0 is less than 1 then the epidemic is expected to slow and eventually stop. Effective social distancing, hand washing, and wearing face masks reduces the spread and lowers R0. Learn more.

Data Notes: 1) The date is the specimen collection date (i.e. when the person went to get tested, not the date when the results came back). 2) The data is subject to change as more results become available. 3) Some people are tested multiple times, which is why the number of positive results is higher than the total number of positive cases. 4) The 7 day rolling average for percent positive test results does not start calculating until there are at least 5 total tests.

PCR tests (Polymerase Chain Reaction) detects the virus's RNA, or antigens, which can be detected if the virus is present in the body. These tests are highly sensitive, and allow us to know if an individual is currently infected. PCR tests are the gold standard for diagnosing COVID-19.

Serology tests look for antibodies, which is the immune response to fighting off the virus. Antibodies stay in the body for a longer period of time and can protect against future infection (but having antibodies doesn't necessarily mean a person is immune to COVID-19 following re-exposure). These tests allow us to know who has been previously infected, but doesn't tell us if the person still has the virus in their system.
