This time of year is peak season for farm fresh produce and other agricultural goods. National Farmers Market Week (Aug. 3-9, 2025) celebrates this season and the many contributions farmers make to our food system and communities. The City of St. Louis is proud to operate Soulard Farmers Market, among the country's oldest and most popular farmers markets and the longest continuously operating market west of th Mississippi.

Soulard Farmers Market holds a special place in the St. Louis community as a historic landmark and tourist destination, as well as a centrally-located market where shoppers can find budget-friendly fresh foods, prepared foods, apparel, souvenirs, and other goods.

Soulard Farmers Market soon will be receiving significant improvements to the market's exterior, including electrical updates, new roofing, fascia, and soffit over the vendor wings of the market which run between 7th Street and 9th Street, and tuckpointing of the entire market building. In addition, many of the architectural and style elements of the market which have become worn down by age and weather are being repaired and preserved.

"Soulard Farmers Market is rooted in the history of St. Louis, playing an important role through the years as a center of commerce in a thriving urban setting and connecting farmers and other vendors with the community," said Greg Hayes, Director, Parks, Recreation, and Forestry. "This investment in the market helps ensure its continued longevity while maintaining its historic features that make it unique."

The market has more than 100 vendors, including six local farms. Vendors offer a variety of produce, fresh meat and fish, baked goods, honey, candy, beverages, snacks, and prepared meals. Non-food vendors offer apparel, health and beauty accessories, fresh flowers, arts and crafts.

While the market partners with many long-time vendors, it also has become integral to the start-up, development, and future of several small businesses.

"The market offers a low-cost, low-risk setting," said Bob Ray, Soulard market manager. "With affordable rent and a steady stream of customers, the market serves as a small business incubator and opportunity for entrepreneurs to build and refine a new business."

For example, Freddie Lee's Gourmet Sauces (now sold in 1,000 stores) and Lona's Lil Eats, a 2019 James Beard semi-finalist, made their starts at the market and now have their own locations.
