Normal entry salary is $30,394.

Nature of Work

This is physically demanding work maintaining the City’s water distribution system. Responsibilities include working with a crew in cutting and caulking pipes, pouring lead joints, digging trenches and laying pipes. Employees must be available for 24-hour emergency call.

Minimum Qualifications

At least two years of experience in water or sewer line construction, the maintenance and repair of pipe work, or as a pipelayer, plumber, or drain layer. Qualifying experience should indicate skill using an air compressor, jackhammer, power saw, and related construction equipment; OR, an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Applicants must be able to perform the heavy lifting required by the installation and repair of water systems.

License: Must possess and maintain a valid Missouri driver’s license while employed by the City of St. Louis. Must be able to present license at the time of the Performance Test. Please note type of license, number, class and expiration date on the Employment Application. Applicants who do not possess a Missouri driver’s license will be required to present a “Driving Record Check” from their State’s Department of Motor Vehicles.

To be eligible for veterans preference points, the applicant must submit a copy of his/her DD 214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty with the Employment Application or at the time of the Performance Test. The Director of Personnel may, in his discretion, accept alternate documentation.

Applicants will be called for the Performance Test based on an evaluation of experience and training as listed on the Employment Application. Applicants should be as detailed as possible on the Employment Application when describing their experience including equipment, materials, and tools used relating to this position. When completing the Employment History section of the application, include reasons for changes in employers and explain any gaps in employment. Resumes will not be accepted as a substitute to a fully completed application. Incomplete and/or carelessly completed applications will not be considered.

The Performance Test will take approximately 1 to 2 hours. Applicants must be able to indicate skill in the following areas: Excavation: Layout, excavate, and backfill an excavation 3'x2'x1'; Pavement Breaker: Operate a paving breaker (Air tool); Measurement: Measure and appropriately match various size pipes.

CHARACTER INVESTIGATION: These positions require candidates to pass a "Character Investigation" prior to appointment. The Director of Personnel may reject the application, or refuse to test and/or eliminate an applicant from an examination as otherwise permitted by law.

MEDICAL: Candidates will be required to pass a “Drug Screen” as part of the medical examination.
