Nature of Work
Incumbents in this position inspect residential construction and remodeling to ensure compliance with building and zoning codes.

One year of recent full-time paid experience working in building inspection and code enforcement, fire safety and prevention, architectural design, or the skilled trades or construction fields where knowledge of building codes and compliance can be acquired. OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Physical Requirements: Applicants must be able to: bend and stoop during the course of performing inspectional duties; climb stairs, ladders, and fire escapes; walk on scaffolding; inspect open multi-story buildings; access trap doors and/or access panels to make inspections; spend approximately 50% of the working day on their feet making inspections; lift a weight of 40 pounds.
License: Must possess and maintain a valid Missouri driver’s license while employed by the City of St. Louis. Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of filing application and be able to present license at the time of the Written Test. Please note type of license, number, class, and license expiration date on the Employment Application. Applicants who do not possess a Missouri driver's license will be required to present a "Driving Record Check" from their State's Department of Motor Vehicles.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Six semester hours in Building Inspection and Code Enforcement, Construction Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, or a closely related program; or one or more certifications awarded from the International Code Council.
Documentation of academic credentials or certifications must be submitted at the time of the Written Test.

MEDICAL: A "Drug Screen" will be administrated as part of the medical examination.

The Director of Personnel may, in his discretion, accept alternate documentation.
