Public Notice regarding FY 2020 JAG grant

The City of St. Louis received notice of eligibility to apply for the FY 2020 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant. The amount the City is eligible to apply for this year is $391,566. The Department of Public Safety is responsible for administering this grant. The application is due by 11:59 p.m. eastern time on August 19, 2020.

The City intends to apply to continue to fund the following projects:

Problem Properties: The focus of the City Counselor Problem Properties program is to prosecute nuisance and vacant derelict property cases. Objectives include nuisance abatement via consults with property owners or court orders, the number of properties assigned and the number of cease and desist letters sent. This grant supports salary and benefits of one Attorney.

Youth Empowerment Services: The focus of the Youth Empowerment Services (YES) is on youth likely to become involved in gang activity. Objectives are to reduce the number of youth engaged in at-risk behavior as measured by the number of new and regular youth assisted, youth successfully completing programming, and youth receiving job referrals. This grant supports salary and benefits for two full time employees who provide the services.

Night Watch Program: The focus of the St Louis Metropolitan Police Department and the Family Court, Juvenile Division Night Watch Program is the reduction of delinquency by increasing the accountability of juveniles under official and unofficial court supervision. Success is measured by the number of visits conducted and by the number of unduplicated youths served. This grant supports overtime and related benefit expenses for Deputy Juvenile Officers and Police Officers.

NIBRS Set-Aside: One of the conditions of the grant is to set aside 3% of the JAG award toward achieving full compliance with the FBI’s National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) data requirements under the Uniform Crime Reporting Program. This project has been underway in the Police Department for several years.
