Cass Avenue Multimodal Improvement Project

The Cass Avenue Multimodal Improvement Project is a federally funded project in St. Louis

Project Overview

The City of St. Louis will be reconstructing approximately two miles of Cass Avenue, stretching from North Grand Boulevard to Tucker Boulevard. This transformative initiative is designed to lower vehicle speeds, reduce crashes, and create a safer, more accessible corridor for all modes of travel.

Project Objectives

Phase One - Cass Avenue from Elliot Avenue (west end) to Tucker Boulevard (east end)

Phase Two - Cass Avenue from North Grand Boulevard (west end) to Elliot Avenue (east end)

Key Safety and accessibility improvements include:
  • Road Diet: Reducing vehicular travel lanes from four to two, with new center medians to provide buffers and calm traffic
  • Pedestrian Enhancements: Installation of curb extensions, raised crosswalks, enhanced pavement striping, and rectangular rapid flashing beacons to improve visibility and safety.

  • Sidewalk & Pathway Upgrades: Replacement of the south-side sidewalk with ADA-compliant facilities, and construction of a new 10-foot shared-use path on the north side of Cass Avenue.

  • Traffic Signal Modernization: Replacement of outdated signals and integration with the City’s Real Time Traffic Center for improved traffic management.

  • Lighting Improvements: Installation of new street lights throughout the corridor to enhance safety and visibility.

Project Status

  • Design for Phase 1 is currently 60% complete and is expected to go out to bid in early 2027.
