A program for disadvantaged City of St. Louis youth ages 17-24 will give them the ability to earn pay, help build affordable housing, and learn leadership skills
SLATE YouthBuild St. Louis City helps young adults gain the education, hands-on training, industry-recognized credentials, and career skills they need to build a successful future.
The program is designed primarily for young people who are out of school and interested in earning their high school equivalency while preparing for careers in construction, transportation, and logistics. Participants have opportunities to develop occupational and leadership skills while preparing to enter high-demand industries.
YouthBuild Is Recruiting
SLATE was recently awarded a $1.29 million YouthBuild grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to launch the next phase of YouthBuild in St. Louis. The new grant will expand education, training, and career opportunities for young adults while helping them overcome barriers to education and employment.
The new YouthBuild program is currently in development, and participant intake will begin in the near future.
While enrollment is not yet open, SLATE is currently recruiting interested individuals. If you would like to be considered for the upcoming program, complete the YouthBuild Interest Form. SLATE will use the information you provide to learn more about your educational and career goals and connect with you as enrollment opportunities become available.

What Does YouthBuild Offer?
YouthBuild combines education with occupational skills training and career preparation. Participants will have opportunities to work toward their educational goals while developing skills that can lead to employment and further training.
Career pathways include:
- Construction: Participants can receive training leading to industry-recognized credentials through the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) in partnership with Ranken Technical College.
- Transportation & Logistics: Participants can pursue training toward a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) in partnership with MTC Trucking.
The newly funded YouthBuild program will also incorporate leadership development, community service, career preparation, and supportive services. Participants completing the program will have access to follow-up assistance designed to support successful transitions into employment and continued career development.
Who May Qualify?
According to the current YouthBuild recruitment requirements, interested individuals must:
- Be 17–24 years old
- Be a City of St. Louis resident
- Have a desire to learn or develop skills in the construction, transportation, or logistics industries
- Be out of school and motivated to obtain a high school equivalency
Limited spots may also be available for individuals who have already graduated from high school.
Documentation Needed
Individuals moving forward with the enrollment process should be prepared to provide:
- Valid driver's license or state ID
- Birth certificate
- Social Security card
- Proof of income

A New Investment in St. Louis Youth
The U.S. Department of Labor recently awarded SLATE $1,285,628 to support the next YouthBuild program. The new funding will provide education, occupational training, leadership development, and career preparation designed to help young people move toward long-term, family-sustaining careers.
