According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, eagles may be seen in our area from late December through early February. Watch for eagles perched in large trees along the water's edge (think the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge, Columbia Bottom Conservation Area, etc.). Get out early in the morning to see the eagles flying and fishing.

While the annual Eagle Days at the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge has been canceled for this year, representatives from the Missouri Department of Conservation will be at the entrance of Columbia Bottom Conservation Area on Saturday January 16, 2021 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to greet eagle watchers and to provide information to help them make the most of their eagle viewing experience that day.

Don't forget to bring binoculars or a spotting scope and dress warmly. Participants will be asked to maintain social distance from staff and other participants, and follow local mask mandates. Reservations are not required.

Nearby best places for winter eagle viewing include:

  • Old Chain of Rocks Bridge south of I-270, off of Riverview Drive, St. Louis
  • Lock & Dam 24 at Clarksville
  • Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary east of West Alton.
